Unhyeon palace is a origin of many historical facts. Even though Unhyeon palace is not a official one, it is still a place that tells a lot of Joseon Dynasty.
First of all, Unhyeon palace is not official, because it is not actually a palace. It is Heungsun Daewongun¡¯s home and was home to king Gojong untill he was twelve.
Unhyeon palace is made of 4 places, which is Sujiksa, Noan dang, Norakdang, Irodang.
Sujiksa is guards¡¯ and servants¡¯ living place. It is divided into numerous small rooms.
Noan dang is the sarangchae of Unhyeon palace, and the word Noan dang means that Heungsun Daewongun himself is very satisfied to live comfortably thanks to his second sun who became king. Heungsun Daewongun made the hanging voard using ccalligraphy master, Kim Jung Hee¡¯s letters. Heungsun Daewongun often discussed political issues and also met guests.
Norakdang is the anchae of Unhyeon palace. It is in the center and is the largest. Hyeongsun Daewongun¡¯s wife used to live in here. However, this was where empress Myeongsung had lessons to become an empress. Also, the marrige of emperor Gojong and empress Myeongsung was held here. So Hyeongsun Daewongun¡¯s family could not use this anchae anymore. So they built a new anchae, which is Irodang.
This is not one of the living place, but I found the lofty gates and the lower gates very interesting.
The lofty gates were to represent the pride Hyeongsun Daewongun felt as a noblemen. It was higher than the tilted roof and a sedan chair and horse could come in through the door.
And the lower gates showed modesty. You had to lower your head to go through the gate.
The interesting part of these doors is that Hyeongsun Daewongun bestowed a meaning even for the doors.
I have always thought Hyeongsun Daewongun as a clever person and also found him to be somewhat stern. However, after visiting Unhyeon palace, I grew to know more about Hyeongsun Daewongun, and I found him very artistical. I personally think he was very full of pride and was ambitious, but also very modest. It was a real pleasure to visit Unhyeon palace and to know more about it.
