I want you to ask a question. Do you know anything about Unheongung Palace? King Gojong live here until his age 12. Actually, Unheongung palace was Heungseon Daewongun¡¯s personal house. But after Gojong became a king, it became a palace. Now I¡¯m going to explain three important places in Unheongung Palace. It¡¯s Noandang, Norakdang, and Irodang.

I¡¯ll explain Noandang first. Noandang is kind of Sarangchae, the man¡¯s living quarter. Noan means ¡®living comfortably in old age¡¯. All the hang boards are written by Kim Jeonghee, the calligraphy master. Heungseon Daewongun met guests, and discuss political issues, too. Also he died here.

The second place that I¡¯m going to explain is Norakdang. Norakdang is an Anchae in this palace. Anchae is woman¡¯s living quarter. Empress Myeongseong received lessons here. And also the wedding ceremony of Gojong and Myeongseong was held here, too. Now can you imagine how big Norakdang is?

Last place is that Irodang, the another Anchae. You will be curious that why there are two Anchae in one palace. The reason is that after Myeongseong became an Empress, she used Norakdang. So Heunseon Daewongun¡¯s family cannnot live in Norakdang. Because of that they made another Anchae for Heunseon Daewongun¡¯s family.
