Do you know where the upper and middle classes of the Joseon Dynasty lived, and was preserved till now?? I went to Namsan Hanok Village today, where the hanoks were preserved. I first learned about the parts of the house, which has sarangchae, anchae and hanglangchae.
Sarangchae is the men`s living place, anchae is the women`s living place and the hanglangchae is the servant`s living place. Then we checked on the upper class, called Yangban`s house. It was made of lots of structures. The sarangchae was higher than the anchae or hanglangchae, and the buildings were all seperated.
Then we learned about how to compare the difference about sarangchae, anchae, and hanglangchae. We could compare sarangchae, anchae, and hanglangchae by the location and the things inside. Also, we could sort the houses and structures by classes.
The men mostly studied, did caligraphy, and their place had one thing in common; they had four friends called the brush, paper, inkstone, and inkstick. The women usually did sewing, cooking, and all the household chores. So they had furniture like sewing materials in their room. Lastly, the servants served for their owners, and the hanglangchae was close to the kitchen and the sarangchae.
The upper class` houses was very big, had lots of buildings, and the main door was very high and big unlike the middle class` houses. The middle class` house, compared to the upper class, it was small and ther was no tall, big main door, and it didn`t have lots of buildings compared to the upper class. Lastly, we got to know about the sadang and the jangdokdae. Sadang is the building to show people`s respect for the ancestors. The jangdokdae is the thing you could store in soybean sauce, soybean paste, kimchi, and more. What does the house of the lower classes look like, then?
