I went to Unheongung today. Unheongung is not an official palace, but it is the personal house of Heungson Dawongun who was the king's father, so it became a palace. King Gojong also lived here until he was 12 years old, before he was the king. The first building you see once you step inside the gate is Sujiksa, where the servants and the guards lived. The place is rather small. I think servants were treated very unfairly, so I'm glad there is no slavery in our country now. Noan dang is the Sarangchae, the men's quarters of Unheongung. Heungson Dawongun lived there, and he also died there. Norak dang is the biggest and the main building of the palace. It is the Anchae, the women's living quarters. King Gojong and Empress Myeongsung had their wedding in Norakdang, and the empress received lessons to become the queen there as well. Heungson Dawongun's wife used to live there, but after Gojong and Empress Myeongsung got married, she moved to another building Heunson Dawongun built for her named Iro dang. So Unheongung has two Anchaes. During the Joseon Dynasty the men and women were always seperated, due to Confusionism. I think this is unfair, espacially to the women because people thought only men should study, while the women were to sit quietly at home and do the housework, tending to children. I'm lucky to have been born in the 21st century and not Joseon because I am a girl. The whole palace is not very large, but it was not a palace originally, so it's actually a pretty big house. It's not fancy and colourful like Gyeongbokgung, but it's a great place for one to see a traditional korean house, with the ondol and all.
