Today I went to Unhyeongung palace. Unheongung was not a palace, it was Heungseon Daewongun’s personal house. Heungseon Daewongung’s son was Gojong. Gojong became king at the age of 12 years old. King Cheoljong passed away at young age and also, he didn’t have any son so Gojong could be the king. But Gojong was so young to be the king so his dad (Heungsun Daewonjun) ruled Joseon on behalf of him. Myeongseon was the wife of Emporor Gojong. Myeong seon received lessons to be the empress at Norakdang and also Norakdang is the place where Myeongseon and Gojong got married. Norakdang is the largest building at Unhyeongung palace. There is a Korean Traditional Heating Systeme (Ondol). Do you know how the Ondol functions? When people cook, they use the warm air to make the floor warm. The warm air goes under the floor so the center of the floor is the warmest place. So, the oldest person and the youngest children sit at the center of the floor. There are wall at Unhyeongung palace. There are Chinese characters. It wrote 영 세 춘 수 부 강 영 만 세 락. It means WATERY SPRING LONG LIFE WEALTH PEACEFULNESS GLORY MILLION YEARS OF LIFE ENJOY. I like this Chinese characters because one letter one letter has a good meaning. I also like the idea of turning Heungseon Daewongung’s personal house into a palace. It was good experience to go to Unhyeongung palace.
