I went to Namsan Hanok Village today. There
were a lot of Hanoks. Hanok is a traditional Korean house. There are three
types of Hanoks in Korea. The palace, a Hanok with tiled roof, and a Hanok with
thatched roof. The king and the royal family lived in a palace, Noblemen lived
in tiled roof Hanoks, and the middle and lower class people lived in a thatched
roof Hanoks. A Janddokdae is a container to store food like soybean paste,
pepper paste, and Kimchi. A special kind of clay is used to make a Jangdok which
allows tiny holes. This makes the Jangdok to have good ventilation. Jangdok is
used for fermentation and storage. Ondol is a traditional Korean floor heating
system. If a fire is at the kitchen, the warm air goes under the house and
heats the floors. The shrines were in the best location of the house. But we couldn¡¯t
go there today. I had fun going to Namsan Hanok Village today.
