During the joseon period, all the peaple in joseon, they had their rite passage in their life.

Accoriding to joseon rite passage, their was four steps.

The first one is coming-of-age ceremony.

In joseon, people called this ceremony to gwanrye or gaerye.

Comming-of-age ceremony of man is called gwanrye(°ü·Ê).

And the ceremony fo woman called gaerye(°³·Ê).

Usually, all the man and woman get this ceremonies on age 15 ~ 20.

And many girls get married before their gaerye ceremony.

After man and woman had their ceremony.

Then their clothes were changed.

In case of man, they tie their hair in to topknot, and wear traditional horse hair called got(°«)

In case of woman, they roll their hair at the back of the head and fix it with long hairpin.

The second one in rite passage is marriage. In joseon it is called honrye(È¥·Ê).

In the past people usually get marriage before age 20.

But usually, joseon peaple married with a stranger.

Because, during the joseon period, people usually married by his parent¡¯s order.

So, if one man is joseon people, he didn¡¯t choose his wife. His parent choose his wife.

So, when the marriage held in the bride¡¯s house, broom and bride had their marriage ceremonies.

But as I said before, they don¡¯t know each other.

Anyway, during the marriage, they take each family to marriage ceremony.

And bowed each other.

The third one in rite passage is the sixty-first birth day.

In joseon period, people of joseon, they officially make the name of year.

All the names of year are consist in two character.

So,their is 10 variety of first character and 12 variety in second.

And the first character and second character are combine, so if first one is called ¡®im¡¯(ÀÓ) and second one is called ¡®in¡¯(ÀÎ), then they combine. At last the combination of character calld ¡®imin¡¯ year (ÀÓÀγâ).

But the only odd turn character can combine with odd turn character.

Also, even turn character can combine with even turn character.

So, it conculate, 12 x 10 x 1/2 = 60.

So, the same-name year return every 60 year.

So, 1+60 is 61, so that is why the joseon people had ceremony in age 61.

Accorfding to this informatiom, if you are 61, then that year is same with your birth year.

So, when people of joseon lived 61 years, they believe that they lived secondary life.

That is the reason why they joseon people held sixty-first birthday.

In that ceremony, the sons and dauthers who borned by the sixty first years old parent bowed to their parents.

And a big table pilled up with rice cakes, fruit and snacks for the sixty first years old person.

Finally, the last one is the memorial service. In korean It is called jaesa(Á¦»ç).

there¡¯s two kind of serevice called charye(Â÷·Ê) and gyje(±âÁ¦)

Many various food were placed on the table.

And people bowed to respect to their ancestors and it¡¯s tradition of korea.
