Do you know the original name of Deoksugung Palace? It was called Gyeongungung Palace. Actually, Gyeongungung was the private house of the brother of King Seongjong. Also, it is extraordinary because it was the first palace to be a western-style buildings. It became the Main Palace after the Japanese Invasion. Afterwards, Gwanghaegun moved to Changdeokgung. Later on, King Gojong came back and expanded Gyeongungung.
Firstly, we saw the Daehanmun. It is the main gate of Gyeongungung. Formerly, it was called Inwhamun. The most important building, place for official events was called the Junghwajeon. Inside, there is the throne, and the Irwolobongbyeong. It represented the king's dignity and existence. In the Seokeodang, there is a sad story. Inmokdabi, the Queen mother was locked here for 5 years. Also, it is the only two-storey building in the palace. Nextly, we saw the Jeukjodang which is the place for coronations. Besides, Junmyeongdang was a place where King Gojong received foreign ministers as guests.
Then, what was Deokhonjeon for? It was a reception hall for foreign guests. Seokjojeon is where the reception halls and bedrooms for king and queen is. It is a western-styled stone building. Jeonggwangheon was a place to relax for Gojong. Gojong enjoyed coffee a lot. Water Clock was invented by Jangyeongsil. It is a device that tells time. I was also curious about the foods in the palace. The palace foods are similar with nowadays foods. King had 12 kinds of side dishes. The two special cooks were called Jubang Sanggung and Daeryeongsuksu. Jubang Sanggung lived in the palace and made daily food for the king. On the other hand, Daeryeongsuksu came to palace to make food when there was a special event.
It was a fascinating time to look atound Gyeongungung. I was especially interested at the Japsangs. Jabsang is the figure on the roofs that people believed it protected them from fire. Japsang is from the Chinese novel, called "Journey to the West". If I had an another chance to visit Gyeongungung next time, I would like to tour more detaily about it. However, it was a beneficial experience for me.
