Jongmyo shrine is the oldest royal shrine in the world. Joseon Kings did memorial services with Shinju for deceased kings and queens here. Shinju is a piece of wood with names of dead. People believed that the souls of deceased kings and queens stayed inside of Shinju. We still do memorial services in Jongmyo on the frist Sunday of may.
