Today, I went to Unhyeongung Palace. Unhyeongung is the place where Heungseon Daewongun lived. First, I saw the Noan dang. Noan dang is a place where men lived and a place where Heungseon Daewongun discussed political issues with the officers. The name Noan means 'living comfortably in old age.' When we go farther inside, we can see the Norak dang. It was built far inside to protect the womens living there. The wedding ceremony of King Gojong and Empress Myeongseong was held in Norak dang. After the Norak dang, I saw the Irodang. The Irodang was built for Heungseon Daewongun's wife. After Gojong got married, King Gojong and his wife lived in Norak dang so Heungseon Daewongun's wofe did not have a place to go. That's why Heungseon Daewongun built Irodang for his wife. The most interesting part was about the ondol system. The ondol system is a traditional korean heating system. If we set fire on the fire hole, it warms the rock. Then, the warm air fills the room and it gets warm in the room. These days, there people use the heaters so we don't use the ondol. But it was fun learning how people in Joseon stayed warm in the cold winter days. |
