Today I went to Unhyeongung. As I was looking forward to go to Unhyeongung I think it might be a very good memory to me. And I would love to talk about Unhyeongung.
The structure of Unhyeongung is composed with Sujiksa, Noan dang, Norak dang and Irodang. Sujisa is where guardians and servants lived, while men's living place was Noan dang, the Sarang chae. Also I heard that guardians lived near the gate to protect noblemen and servants lived near Anchae to serve their masters. And Norak dang was the Anchae which were used as women's living area. Anchae was deep inside the house, because to keep womens safe. Lastly, there is Irodang. Irodang was for Heunsun Daewongun's wife as she was not able to stay in Norak dang anymore, because of the marriage of king Gojong and empress Myeongseong. After marriage empress Myeongseong had to stay there. Also 'Iro' means two old people and even though it is just my personal thought, I think that Heunsun Daewongun's wife might not be so pleasant to give her the largest place for her daughter in law.
Also there are two gates in Unhyeongung. The Lofty gate and the Lower gate. Lofty gate was to represent the pride of noblemen and help seden chair or horses to come in. And the Lower gate represented modesty. I think Heunsun Daewongun's thought is very interesting, as he made the gate lower to make people lower themselves before entering his house.
I really liked Unhyeongung because it was able to learn about noblemens' life also.
