Today I went to National Folk Museum and experienced many things. About the seasonal life of Koreans, and significant events of Korean¡¯s life. From these two topics that I had learnt today, I think that The more vital information that I thunk I had experienced was the important events of the Korean¡¯s life.
The first event that happens is the most important, birth. It happens to every person, but there was a special tradition that was done in the Joseon Dynasty. The family of the newborn baby hung a straw rope on the gate. That tells strangers to not come in because there is a baby. The items that were attached on the straw rope was different from gender. If the baby is a boy, charcoal and red pepper were fastened. Red means to displace bad sprits, and charcoal sucks up all the bad sprits. If the baby is a girl, charcoal and pine branches were fastened. Charcoal means the same thing and pine branches and for needles because it does a big role in the girl¡¯s life.
The second event is Baekil. It is celebrated on the 100th day the baby was born. In present, the baby commonly survives 100 days. However, in the Joseon period, not many babies could survive, because they were weak.
The third event is Dol. It is the 1st birthday of the baby. In Joseon we did a special game for the baby called dol jabi. There are many items on the table and each has meanings if they pick up an item. For example, if the baby picks up thread, the baby will have long life.
The forth event is Kwanrye. It is an event that tells the transition of being a child to adult. In this event the children change their hair style. For boys, they do a topknot and put on a gat, for the girls, they roll their hair and pick on a biyeo.
The fifth event is marriage. They often do the wedding ceremony on the bride¡¯s house and go the husband¡¯s house.
The sixth event is Hwangap. It celebrates the 60th birthday in Joseon. In present times, many people live until 60, but in the Joseon period not many people lived until that age.
The seventh event is Jesa. This is a memorial service we do in Joseon. There are many kinds of Jesa, but today I will introduce 2. The first type is Chare, they do the memorial service on mornings of important holidays. The second type is Gije they do the memorial service on nights of the person that the person had died.
In conclusion, I think that the National Folk Museum is a place where we can learn a lot of Korean¡¯s traditional events and lifestyle. Next time I can come back to this museum, I wish that I can dig into more information about what I learnt about today. |
