Today I learned about 2 wars. One was in Korea, and the other one was in the US. Japan attacked Joseon in 1592 and the war lasted until 1599. Toyotomi Hideyosi, the leader of Japan wanted to stabilize the government and weaken the local nobles' power, so he tried to conquer Joseon. Joseon was weak in the military system because they were in peace for 200 years. Japan had muskets while Joseon only had bows, so they were powerful and took over a large part of Joseon in a short time. But a  Korean Admiral Lee Sun Shin won a lot of wars in the sea and played a big role in defeating the Japanese. The war ended as Joseon's victory but the land was destroyed completely. By this war, red pepper came to the Korean peninsula and people started to make kimchi using it.

The Civil War broke out in 1861. It continued for 4 years. It happened because the North and the South had different opinions about the abolition of slavery. North America wanted to free slaves and make them be workers in factories, but South America opposed. South America's major industries were farm work like cotton, so they needed slaves for their workforce. North America won the war at the end and slavery was gone. The slaves were freed, became American citizens, and got the right to vote.
