Changgyoeng Palace
Changgyoeng palace was built by King Seongjong for his mother and his grandmother. When Gyeongbok palace and Changdeok palace were deatroyed, the Changgyeong palace was used as the main palace. Changgyoeng palace has an extremely sad history. Lady Jang, the royal concubine of King Sookjong, was dead by drinking a cup of poison. Also, Crown Prince Sado was put to death in a large rice chest, unable to drink even a drop of a water. Changgyoeng Palace was rebuilt in 1984. The most memorable things are Janpsang and Dancheong. Janpsang are small figures that are placed on the roof. people believed that they protected the Palace from fire. Janpsang comes from Journey to the West. There are Buddhist monk, monkey, and a pig. Dancheong has five colors. Red means fire. Black means water, and green means trees or woods. White, defines metal. Lastly, yellow means Earth. These five colors mean the five elements that forms the Universe. I think today I leaned lots of useful knowledge from Changgyeong Palace. Thank you. |
