Hello, everyone. My name is Emily and my Korean name is 고은서. Today, I learned about Buddhism in Goryeo Dynasty so I would like to talk about how Siddhartha became Buddha. A long time ago in India, there was a prince named Siddhartha. Siddhartha was surrounded by fancy things since he was born so he did not know how common people and servants lived in misery. As he grew, he became curious about the life outside of the kingdom so he asked his father’s permission to get outside of the kingdom. His father gave him the permission but he had secretly asked his servants to clean around the palace and make the poor and sick people go to the edge of the city so that Siddhartha would not get too serious about the life outside of kingdom. When Siddhartha went out to city, he thought that the city was beautiful just like the palace, but when he went around the corner, he saw a very old person who was a beggar and asked his servant, “Why is the person like this?”  And his servant answered, “He can’t see and walk so he is begging to live. Anyone can be like him. He might die pretty soon. You are not exception about that too.” Then Siddhartha asked, “What is death?” After his servant explained what death is to Siddhartha, Siddhartha realized that death is the end of life and it happens to everybody. Siddhartha was in shock because now he knew that people could be sick and will die. He also felt all the fancies he had was lie and that led him to live outside of castle and wear like a beggar.    For years, he lived like a beggar and tried to learn why people grow old and die. One day, he was thinking about secret of life and he claimed that “People who are happy and have good lives are rather sick or poor than healthy or rich.” From that on, he was known as an enlightened one, called “Buddha”    in Sanskrit. He advised his followers to make peace with his enemies, to be honest and to be away from force. Nowadays, we call those followers of Buddha as Buddhists.
