Joseon is related a lot with many Confucian idea and ideals, such as humanity, righteousness, courtesy and knowledge. Education, art and school curriculums were based on Confucian ideals.
If you wanted to be a official, you had to pass the first examination called Saengwon or Jinsa. Then they could apply for the civil servant examination. Usually, 33 people passed the examination. 1st prize was called 장원급제, 2nd and 3rd prize were called 방안급제, Eol-gwa were called 탐화급제, and the rest Byeong-gwa were just called 급제. The civil service examination ‘Gwageo’ checks student’s ability to understand the Chinese classics. Unfortunately, only those who come from high-ranking families were allowed to take the test.
I am thankful that I was not born in the Joseon Dynasty, for I might have been a low class or bad at studying. Still I think Joseon Dynasty’s Confucian is very interesting. I hope I have another chance to study about Confucian. |
