Today we went to Namsan Hanok village.

Hanok is Korea's traditional building.

There were four kinds of buildings.

They are Palace, tiled roof Hanok, Hanok with thatched roof, and the buddist temple.

Only the Palace and Buddist temple could have dancheong

Royal families lived in Palaces and monks lived in Budddist temple.

Almost all the Buddist temple are located in mountains.

But we only saw tiled roof Hanok today.

Noble men lived in here.

It is separated into five parts.

It is because of Confucianism.

Sarangchae was for men and Anchae was for women.

Sarangchae is divided into two parts.

The  host lived in the bigger one and their sons lived in the smaller sarangchae.

There is an wooden floor which people rested on to pass the hot summer away.

Servants stayed in Haengnangchae.

There is also shrine where they kept their ancestors and said greetings every day.

Noblemen didn't have a toilet in their house like we do now.

It is because of the foul smell from it.

So It is separated from other buildings.

They washed their face and took showers in their room because they were not allowed to show their body to any other people.

If they wanted to go toilet at night they used chamber pot.

It is like a portable toilet.

Unmarried daughters stayed in Byeolchae and rarely came out.

Commoners used to live in houses with thatched roof.

Straw, wood, and soil was the major materials in this houses.

Because all the materials were from nature, It is cool in summer and warm in winter.

Commoners didn't have Sarangchae and Anchae like Nobles.

It was all connected like 1 shape.

There is Ondol which is an Korea's traditional and creative heating system.

I think it is very useful.

Ondol is like catch two birds with one stone.

When you build fire at the fireplace to cook something, it heats the air beneath the floor.

So the hot air goes through all the rooms and as a result, the rooms all get heated well.

Lastly, the cooled air goes out by exiting through the chimney.

Thus, they can cook and heat the house at same time.

I think it is the best heating system at that time.

It is still used in many houses now.

There is one more great invention in Joseon dynasty.

It is named Jangdokdae.

Jangdok is a pot for storing foods.

It is better than a plastic one because it has good ventilation.

Jangdok had very small holes on it.

Water or dirt can't come through it but air can, so the air inside is always fresh. It helps fermentaion and storage.

It was really fun to learn much about living in Joseon dynasty and I hope to go to the Namsan Hanok Village
