Unhyeon Palace was not an offical palace, but it is important in modern Korean history.

It was the Heung-seon-dae-won-gun's personal house. Heung-seon-dae-won-gun is father of King Gojong. But how did Gojong could become a king?

King Cheol-jong didn't have any sons.

 At that time, Andong Kim's clan was the greatest and pressed the royal family.

 However, Heung-seon-dae-won-gun pretended to be a fool on purpose.

 So, Heung-seon-dae-won-gun's son could become a king, and he is king Gojong.

He married with Queen Min(16).

 Queen Min and Heung-seon-dae-won-gun were the enemy because they had the different thinking.

 Queen Min liked have a close relationship with Russia but Heung-seon-dae-won-gun thought don't believe them.

That's why the Japanese murdered Queen Min.

 In Unhyeon Palace, there are a few place.

There is a lofty gate and lower gate.

 Lofty gate is higher than tiled roof.

 A sedan chair and a horse could get into the house through this gate. Lower gate is low to represent modesty.

 Noan-dang is the Sa-rang-chae(men's living area) of Unhyeon palace. Noan means "living comfortably in old age".

 There is a calligraphy letters.

Norak-dang is the Anche(woman's living area) and it is the central and the largest place.

 Queen Min received lessons to become Queen and it is the place where King Gojong and Queen Min married.

 Irodang was a place where Heung-seon-dae-won-gun's family stayed because after the marriage of King Gojong and Queen Min, they couldn't stay in Norak-dang.

 Sujiksa was a place where servants and guards were stay. 

 Now, I can guess why Unhyeon palace is important.
