Today, I went to Gyeongbok Palace, which was the beobgung, the main palace, among all five. Geeongbok means a special thing, which is "great fortune." It was built by the first king of Joseon, King Taejo. The main gate of this palace is Gwanghamun. This was rebuilt three times. First was the Imjin War, and rebuilt by Heung-son-dae-won-gun. Next was the Korean war, rebuilt by president park. The last was because of remodeling, that started from 2009. Now I will tell you about some of the buildings in Gyeongbok Palace. GeunJeong Jeon is the Beobjeon, or main building of Gyeongok Palace. Important ceremonies such as cooronations were held here. The king's office is SaJeong Jeon. This is where the king and the officals talked and studied.
Gang Neong Jeon was the king's living quarters. No dragon ridges were on the roof since dragon ridges stand for a king, but the king stayed there so there was no need to bea symbol.
The queen's own living quarters was GyoTae Jeon. There is a special room in GyoTaeJeon which is GeonSunGak. A beautiful garden called Ahmisan is beside built for the queen, since it was very difficult for the queen to go outside. A palace for the king's mother is JaGyeongJeon. There are beautiful chimneys and flower walls in the hall. There are also ten symbols of long life such as turtle, crane, sun, rock, deer and wind. After going to Gyeongbok Palace, I could learn a lot about the traditions of the royal family long ago. It was an exciting experience. |
