Seoul Museum of History
Today, I went to Seoul Museum of History where we saw the exhibits on the Joseon Dynasty, that King Taejo founded in 1392. King Taejo was the one who moved the capital to Hanyang because of its central location and beautiful nature.
I especially remembered the Hyungbae, which was the embroidered pattern on a civil or military officer's clothes. It was located on the chest. There were a tiger pattern for military officers that standed for bravery, a crane pattern on a civil officer's chest for integrity, and a dragon pattern for only the crown prince or king. The number of animals on the patterns represented the level of officers : the ones who had two animals, which meant higher level, were called Dangsangkwan, and the others who had one animal, which meant lower level, were called Danghakwan.
Since the civil and military officers needed to wear the same color and design everyday, I thought that they would have been a bit annoyed because they didn't have any choice. But maybe the pride of being a civil or military officer took the annoyance away.
Even if a girl could not become a civil or military officer, I am still relieved that we have a free choice of clothes. While thinking of the annoyance, I also thought that it might be better to be a common person who at least had a choice of clothes even if they were usually white.
A civil or military officer could also have some stress because they needed to be careful to watch every step in the palace to not get in any trouble. Common people didn't need to watch their every step as much as civil or military officers. Would you want to be a civil or military officer? |
