The National Folk Museum contained many things I didn't know. Of all the many things, I was most interested about Hunminjeongeum, the Life of the Koreans, and the porecelain and the celadon. The Hunminjeonge- um was made by King Sejong, the fourth king of Joseon. He made it because he was concerned about the common citizens having hard times learning the Chinese characters. Hunminjeongeum has 10vowels and 14consonants. Thanks to the Hunminjeongeum, many common citizens had to spend less time learning it. The Life of Koreans has 6 steps, but I was most interested in the step 1. Birth and step 3. Dol. The first step, birth includes a rope called Gumjul. The Gumjul was for protecting the house from evil spirits and keeping many people from coming in the house. They hung charcoal and pepper when a baby boy was born and hung charcoal and pine tree branches when a baby girl was born. In the 3rd step, Dol, the baby is placed infront of the table with many items placed. These items are usually a book, rice or money, and thread. If a child picks up a book, he/she will be a scholar. If the baby picks up rice or money, he/she will be rich. If the baby picks up the thread, he/she will live long. Another thing I was interested about is the porcelain and celadon. The porcelain was the vase with a blue shade and a thin start with a fat body. The celadon was the vase with a white color and a fat start with a thin body. I was surprised with the Life of the Koreans because it was simillar to these day' people's lives. |
