Changdeok Palace was made in 1405 by King Taejong after Gyeongbokgung Palace. Actually, the first palace that was made is Gyeongbokgung Palace, but because of a lot of sad and painful events at the beginning of Joseon Dynasty, Joseon’s kings usually just lived and controlled the country at Changdeokgung.

Unfortunately, the ‘Imjin War’ that happened in 1592 to caused a lot of damages of our palaces. When the Imjin War ended, Gwanghaekoon rebuilt Changdeok Palace and made it as Chosen’s best palace. After that, it was the king’s main residence for about 300 years.

Changdeok Palace’s big beauty is that it is in harmony with nature. It is balanced with the surrounding nature showcasing the beauty of nature; they made Changdeok Palace a work of art. Not only that, they designed the roof and the door, the bars (muntin) and the walls very detailedly. This is one of the proud beauties of our palaces. Even in each tile, each wall, and at every doorknobs, the artists made a design meaning blessing and longevity. In this, we can feel how wise and sagacious our ancestors were. Because of its: ecofriendly beauty, and historic value, Changdeok Palace is listed as one of UNESCO World Heritage site. In this wonderful palace, there are things that I want to share.

  Donhwamun

The first place in Changdeokgung which I want to share is the largest gate in Changdeokgung: Donhwamun. The reason Donhwamun is the largest gate in Changdeokgung is because it is a two story gate. In the second floor, there is a drum and a bell. Joseon people strung the drum 33 times at 4am, which meant it was the opening of the world, and strung the bell 28 times at 10pm which meant it was peaceful night.

    Injeongjeon

Injeongjeon is the throne hall. It’s the main hall where a lot of events were held (one of it is coronations). The king also greeted foreign visitors here, in Injeongjeon.

    Seonjeongjeon

After the Injeongjeon, I want to tell you about Seonjeongjeon. Seonjeongjeon is the building where the Joseon king did most of his work. It’s the ONLY building that has the blue-tiled roof (it’s more expensive than the other tiles). In this building, important events were held here (for example, funerals).

      Huijeongdang &  Daejojeon

Third, I will explain about Huijeongang AND Daejojeon.

First, Huijeongdang was the king’s sleeping chamber. Daejojeon was the queen’s residence. Because the queen had to stay in Daejojeon ALL the time, it had to be more beautifully decorated.

  Nakseonjae and Seokbokheon

Lastly, I’ll tell you about Nakseonjae and Seokbokheon.

Nakseonjae is a complex of THREE buildings (it was built by King Heonjong in 1847). It has the king’s living quarters

,a library, and a villa for his concubine Lady Kim. Nakseonjae and Seokbokheon is not painted with dancheong (5 main colors: Red, yellow, green&blue, white, and black). After Japan occupied our country, the king’s family should live in Nakseonjae.

I thought about Changdeok Palace, it was a proud palace that continued with Joseon’s sad and happy histories for 500 years. Even the king changed a lot and the Japanese came in so they burnt up all the palaces, Changdeok Palace had kept its place. Of course, there aren’t all the buildings left but still, at the empty place of Changdeok Palace (because the Japanese burnt some part) I heard the king’s breath, his laughter, his sigh, and his foot step one by one.

When I passed through Changdeokgung’s empty field (that originally had buildings but was all damaged by Japan), I felt that now we should raise our power by ourselves. Through this Changdeok Palace exploration, I knew that I should learn more about our culture, our history and tell about Korea’s proud sundial, Korea’s original printing technique, Korean alphabet (Hangul), and our foods to the entire world and be Korea’s smart protector. I promised to myself, to my future that I will.
