Independence

Our country achieved independence on August 15th, 1945. There were many events before we obtained it.

In 1910, Japan forced Korea to sign the Ulsa Treaty, and the Japanese occupation began. Then, in March 1st, 1919, the March 1st Independence movement began. In the movement, 29 out of 33 leaders declared independence of Korea, and thousands of people shouted “dae-han doklip manse!” on the streets. Yu-kwan-sun planned a joint demonstration in many towns. Even though this movement did not succeed in getting independence right away, it did have a lot of impact on achieving independence from Japanese occupation. Although it was the U.S. that actually helped us to get the nation’s independence, I think many worked hard and put great effort into our liberation from Japan’s occupation the Korean people.
