Hello, everyone. My name is Tony. Today, we went to the National Folkmuseum. The most impressive thing to me was the life of Koreans.
When a baby was born, they hung a straw rope called Geumjul. For the boy, they tied charcoal and the red peppers which symbolized boy to it. Also, the red pepper's color red was the color which devils were scared of. There was a celebration called Baek il, the baby's 100th day celebration. They held a party on that day and also, the family shared rice cakes with the neighbors. Many babies died before 100 days so it became a celebration. The first birthday of baby was called Dol. The baby seated where there were various things on the table. Each thing had meanings of what the baby would be. I think the parents would've been more excited than a baby did.
When a person became adult, people held a ceremony which was called Kwanrye for boys, and Gere for girls. Boys put on Gat on their Sangtu. Girls fixed their hair with a long hairpin, Binyeo. But sometimes girls did it at the marriage. Most people got married before the age of 20. Parents usually decided who they will marry. Because of this, I like the modern wedding more.
When a person became 60, they held a celebration because not many people live till at the age of 60. The celebration was called, Hwangab or Hoegab. Many kinds of foods were on the table and the sons and daughters bowed to a person.
Finally, I will talk about jesa which was an memorial service. It had two kinds. Chare and Gije. Chare was for the ancestors and it was held on the mornings of holidays. Gije was held on the day of a person's death.
I think the Koreans had fun life. I had a great fun with writing this essay. I think there are so many interesting things in our history. Did you enjoyed well? Thank you for listening. |
