Do you know what the main and the biggest palace in Korea is? There were five palaces during the Joseon Dynasty: Gyeongbokgung, Gyeonghuigung, Gyeongungung, Changgyeonggung and Changdeokgung. Among these palaces, Gyeongbokgung is the largest, and I went there today. Gyeongbokgung means "The Palace of Great Fortune." Its main gate is Gwanghwamun, and it was rebuilt by Heungson Daewongun and King Gojong; two times. There are inner palace and outer palace in Gyeongbokgung. Geunjeongjeon(근정전), Sajeongjeon(사정전) and Gangneongjeon(강녕전) are the outer palaces, and most of them are the king's room. The inner palaces are Gyotaejeon(교태전) and Jagyeongjeon(자경전). Inner palaces are related to women. There are two pavilions in Gyeongbokgung; Gyeonghoeru(경회루) and Hyangwonjeong(향원정). Pavilions were built for resting place. Gyeongbokgung was built in 1395, by King Taejo. However, because of Japanese's invasion, it got burned so people restored it in 2010 again. There were many sad stories in this beautiful Gyeongbokgung. Thank you for reading my travel essay. |
