Today I visited Chang Gyeong Palace as a a part of my second class at Damduk Intensive. Before entering the main gate, we had to cross a stone bridge. The reason you cross the bridge is because the running water will cleanse your spirit and prevent evil sprits from entering. The first thing I noticed when I walked in was the beautiful ceiling painted with Dancheong. Then I noticed that there was a net covering the beautiful patterns. When I asked my teacher why, she answered that it is to prevent any birds from nesting on the ceiling. When later she told us that these palaces were impacted by Confucianism and they were to be a part of nature, I found it was ironic how they would put the net of the ceiling to avid any bird's nests. Overall, it was a very nice visit and I would definitely come here again. |
