Donggwol is the name of the east palaces, Changgyeonggung Palace and the Changdokgung Palace.

 Seogwol is the name of the west palaces, Gyeonghegung Palace and the Gyeongungung Palace.

 King Seongjong built Changgyeonggung Palace for his mother and grandmother.

 Changdokgung Palace was built as a secondary palace. It was built in case of a serious accident in the main palace. After the Japanese invasion of 1592, it became the main palace.
