Korea experienced lots of wars in the past. And Korea is still in the middle of the war, war that is stopped, but is not over for about 75 years.
Gyeback is an amazing general in Baekjae. He was ordered to fight with the Silla's army at Hwangsanbul. He knew Baekjae's army is not storng enough to fight against Silla. Silla was dominant in many ways. Silla had about 10 times more soldier than Baekjae. Even though Gyeback was loyal to his country, Baekjae, it was very clear to him that Baekjae will lose and he will die, and Silla's armies will insult his family. So he killed his family by himself. And he and the soldiers of Baekjae fought Silla bravely. Baekjae's soldiers fought to die, and this lead to the winning. However, Silla sent the Hwarang, Gwanchang, to Baekjae's camp and fought the enemies, but he returned as a corpse. Gwanchang's sacrifice lead to Silla army's determination, and also Baekjae's collapse.
In Goryeo period, about 600 years after the Hwangsanbul war, Koreans faced a new big war. If a Hwangsanbul war was a war between Koreans, this war is a invasion, a war between Korean and foreign country. Mongol empire was getting stronger at that time. Their territory was a Europe to the end of the Asia, specifically, right next to the Korea. And the Mongol Empire tried to make Korea as their territory. So they invaded Korea in 1231. At that time, Goryeo was the atheist regime. Leaders escaped to Gangwhado, because Mongol armies were not trained to fight in water, and stayed there. However, they actually didn't care about the commoner's life outside the Gangwhado. In 1259, Goryeo finally surrendered.
War is such a cruel thing, that kills ordinary and innocent people. However, war happens by some leader's greed. I believe these cruel histories shouldn't be repeated in the future. |
