In the past, when the baby was born people hung straw rope infront of there door. straw rope was hung for 3 week and this was to keep the evil spirits out of the house and warn people to not enter the house. If a boy was born they hang charcole and red Pepper and if a girl was born they would hang charcole and pine - branch. Also, the reason why there were red pepper is because the color red means to keep the evil spirts away.
