I went to the Gyeongungung palace. I learned many things there, but I will tell you a few about this amazing palace.

Gyeongungung palace was originally a private house for Seonjong¡¯s older brother. However, in the 19th century, Emperor Gojong moved into this place and added a few more buildings. My favorite building made by Gojong is Jeonggwanheon. Jeonggwanheon was where Emperor Gojong met foreign guests and drank coffee. This place was designed by a Russian architect named Sabatin. Jeonggwanheon was an important place because it had both Western style and Korean style mixed together.

In the 19th century, coffee was imported to Korea. Many people did not know how to drink it properly, so they swallowed the whole cup of coffee like liquor. However, Emperor Gojong knew how to drink properly, but he was almost killed by coffee. Someone put poison in his coffee, but luckily, Gojong noticed that the taste was a bit different. Then he spat it out and discovered that the coffee was poisoned.

I think it was interesting that Emperor Gojong noticed that his poisoned coffee¡¯s taste was different. However, I feel sad that Emperor Gojong might have died from a poisoned beverage. I truly think that Gyeongungung palace is a palace with a lot of history.
